i. Meaning of poem: true freedom is when everyone is working together to free the slaves
ii. Symbolism: the chain that holds all slaves together
iii. Pathos: appeals to emotions of mothers who want freedom for their sons and the pride/dignity of free men

i. Analogy of sports team: one great player cannot win a game if the rest of the team does not work hard to succeed
*This relates to the poem because if all men do not work together to free all slaves in the south, true freedom
does not exist.

i. Meaning of poem: the easy garment she wears is not made by hardworking slaves and by wearing clothes made by slaves, oppression is encouraged.
ii. Symbolism: slave garments represent oppression and the difficult lives of slaves; easy garment represents working against oppression
iii. Pathos: appeals to emotional journey of slave life (tears, sweat, and blood) and making those who encourage oppression feel guilty
